How We Evolved
From Watercolor Dreams to On-Demand Innovation
Family Fabrics was born in January 2019, inspired by something beautifully simple—our grandmother’s aquarel (watercolor) paintings. What started as a tribute to her timeless, hand-painted designs quickly grew into a business built around creativity, family, and craftsmanship. We are three siblings—two sisters and a brother—who set out to create high-quality, locally printed fabrics for creative sewists, small businesses, and independent fabric resellers. We poured our hearts into curating designs that felt authentic, timeless, and rooted in artistry.
A Big Leap: Printing Our Own Way
In the early days, we stocked printed fabrics. But as trends shifted faster and sustainability became non-negotiable, we made a bold move: we invested in our own digital fabric printer, bought our warehouse and office space, and switched to printing on demand. No more overstock. No more waste. Just sustainable, real-time production that responded to what our customers actually needed. Then came swimwear. As customers began asking for specialty fabrics like stretch materials for swimwear, we expanded again—adding a dye-sublimation printer and heat press. That technology opened the door to more than just fabrics: we could now print on towels, sherpa blankets, and so much more.
A Turning Point: Your Designs, Made by Us
The real shift happened when we realized people didn’t just want to choose from our designs—they wanted to bring their own to life. Businesses needed small-batch flexibility. Families wanted one-of-a-kind products. Sewists wanted personalization. So we built a model that allowed for uploading custom designs, adjusting patterns and colors, and adding text—all within our easy-to-use online editor. This wasn’t just for creatives—it became a solution for other businesses, too. From independent brands to small shops, our flexible production allows no minimums, fast turnaround, and zero inventory stress. Just production-on-demand, made locally in Joure, The Netherlands.
